After much debate about how electric vehicles will pay a similar fee to the gas tax, Governor Josh Shapiro signed a law that aims to end that debate.
The alternative fuel tax will be replaced with an electric vehicle registration fee. Previously, electric vehicle owners would have to report the amount of electricity used by their vehicle.
Now when registering an electric vehicle, a fee of $380 will have to be paid for noncommercial vehicles while those registering a commercial vehicle will pay $450. The registration will not be given out until the fee is paid.
The revenue will go towards the Motor License Fund for highway maintenance and construction, the same as the fuel tax.
