Pennsylvania’s top law enforcement official has taken action against a bank accused of engaging in aggressive collection practices on car loans.
Attorney General Josh Shapiro announced that Northwest Bank has agreed to enter into an Assurance of Voluntary Compliance.
The Attorney General’s Office took action after the bank filed multiple collection suits in a district justice court in Warren, Pennsylvania even though most of the defendants had purchased their vehicles in another part of the state. Northwest also allegedly sent letters threatening further legal action including sheriff sale of property.
Northwest has not admitted any violation through this agreement but has agreed to comply with all consumer protection laws. Any judgments obtained since 2013 as a result of those practices will be canceled.
Consumers qualifying for relief will receive notification from Northwest.
