Pennsylvania’s top law enforcement official is asking the Federal Communications Commission to take action to stop the increase of spoofed calls and texts.
Attorney General Josh Shapiro is one of 42 attorney generals filing a formal legal complaint with the FCC about adopting rules concerning enforcement against caller ID spoofing to the U.S. originating from other countries.
The number of spoofed calls and the financial losses sustained by victims of those scams has increased by nearly 50% in recent years.
Americans received almost 18 billion scam robocalls in 2018 and imposter scams cost consumers $488 million last year.
