State officials are warning Pennsylvania residents about a scam involving social security.
PA Department of Banking and Securities Secretary Robin Wiessman explains people have been getting calls from scammers who say they’re with the Social Security Administration.
“They say they are notifying potential victims that they are under investigation for suspicious activity on their social security account,” Wiessman said. “The criminal will claim that if the victim doesn’t do exactly as their told, they will be arrested, lose their benefits, or some other tragic outcome.”
Wiessman says the scammer will then ask you to send pre-paid gift cards.
In order to avoid falling victim to a scam, officials advise to not answer unrecognizable phone numbers, and not provide any personal or financial information over the phone.
