State officials are warning about a new, potentially more deadly additive making its way into the illegal drug supply.
The Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs is tracking the drug called “xylazine” which is a large-animal tranquilizer also known as “tranq.”
“Tranq is an adulterant that is put into the opioid supply that is happening right now in Pennsylvania. It is a drug that is deadly and it does not respond to narcan, which is also known as Naloxone,” Dr. Lakita Davis-Jones is the department’s acting secretary.
Davis-Jones says that a majority of the tranq drug supply is currently in the Philadelphia area.
