A bill sponsored by a local lawmaker would allow for better reimbursement for EMS agencies that respond to an emergency situation and provide care that does not include transport to a hospital.
State Senator Don White, who represents the 41st district, is the prime sponsor of Senate Bill 1003, which was approved by the Senate on Wednesday.
“We have a lot of problems out there that have come to our attention in regards to EMS services, especially when the agencies are involved with drug overdoses, that are giving the gift of life, and then the patient refuses to be transported to the hospital, which means EMS services are not paid for,” White said.
Currently, insurance companies and Medicaid are only required to reimburse EMS companies when services include transportation to a hospital.
House Bill 1013 is a similar bill to this one but does not include the provision about Medicaid. That bill passed the State House last month.
