A bill passed the state senate that would ban transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports.
The vote was largely split along party lines. Republican Senator Judy Ward of Blair County supports the bill.
“This legislation ensures that all young women in the Commonwealth has a fair chance to compete in the sport they love,” Ward said.
Democrat Senator Steve Santarsieso of Bucks County says this legislation only hurts transgender students.
“These are real life issues for these kids. And these kids are flesh and blood human beings. They deserve better than some circus here in the state legislature,” Santarsieso said.
Governor Tom Wolf says he will veto the bill.
