A proposed toll on nine Pennsylvania bridges may have a difficult time being implemented following a bill that passed the state Senate.
The Senate approved a bill that would void and reform parts of the transportation department’s P3 initiative. The plan sought to implement a user fee on some bridges in Pennsylvania–including one on I-79 near Bridgeville and one in Clarion County.
State Senator Scott Hutchinson voted in favor of this bill as he sees PennDOT’s move as a “backdoor tax.” He argues that PA drivers already face some of the nation’s highest gas taxes and that the P3 board doesn’t have the right to impose a toll without legislative approval.
