A new bill introduced in the State Senate would prohibit a popular social media app from being used on state-owned devices.
Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill says the app TikTok poses a cyber security threat and her bill would ban it from being used on state-owned phones and networks.
“TikTok presents an unprecedented level of cyber espionage, collecting of government data, and a threat to personal security,” Phillips-Hill said.
TikTok is owned by ByteDance, one of the most valuable private companies in China.
Nine other states have made the move to ban TikTok from state-owned devices. State Treasurer Stacy Garrity has already banned the app from devices in her department.
