A number of Butler County residents experienced a power outage Wednesday morning following strong overnight storms.
A mix of powerful winds and lightning rolled through the area just after midnight. The storms led to downed wires and power outages.
First Energy is reporting just over 100 residents without power as of 2 p.m. At one point Wednesday morning over 1,000 residents were dealing with no electricity.
However, the storms moved through the area fairly quickly, so flooding wasn’t an issue for most residents.
The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down in northeast Allegheny County early Wednesday morning.
The tornado occurred near Tarentum around 1:20 a.m. in the area of Days Run Road.
Severe thunderstorms tore through Western Pennsylvania with winds gusting up to 70 and 80 miles per hour. Many trees and homes were damaged including three buildings in the area needing new roofs.
A meteorologist responded to the scene to conduct a full tornado survey with more detailed information likely available later.
