A student at a Zelienople private school has been charged with aggravated assault after intentionally being hit in the head with a ball.
The incident happened in February at St. Stephen Academy in Zelienople. According to charging documents, 18-year-old Tyler McCleery was in the gymnasium when his teacher asked him to put a basketball away. McCleery refused and intentionally hit the teacher in the head with the basketball. The teacher had a prior medical condition that prevented her from being hit in the head.
Weeks after the incident, the victim began having vision failure which is a result of her medical condition. She eventually required surgery as a result of being hit according to a doctor.
McCleery has been charged with aggravated assault and harassment. He’s awaiting a preliminary hearing.
