The first African American to play in the Sugar Bowl, Bobby Grier, has passed away. Grier traveled to Georgia with Pitt on his 23rd birthday in 1956. Georgia’s governor, opposed to racial integration, attempted to keep Grier from playing in the game. Grier’s Pitt teammates along with rival Georgia Tech’s team refused to play the game without Grier. He was 91.
