Those looking for something active to do on New Year’s Day can take a hike on the North Country Trail in Moraine State Park.
According to the Butler Outdoor Club, it’s the best way to start the year out right. The event is appropriately-named the ‘First Day Hike’ and will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
Hikers should meet at McDanel’s Pavilion 7 on the North Shore. Hikers can decide to walk between one and six miles on moderate terrain. A warm up reception will follow the hike including hot cocoa, cookies, and a warm fire.
Those planning to attend should dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes or boots, and bring water and snacks. Friendly dogs on a leash are welcome.
A First Day Hike is also planned to take place at Jennings Environmental Education Center in Slippery Rock.
