The Slippery Rock University football team remained in fifth in the second set of official NCAA “Super Region One” rankings announced Monday. The regional rankings are used by the NCAA to determine the 28 teams who compete for the national championship in Division II. The top seven from each Super Region in the final rankings that are released November 12th earn a spot in the playoffs. The Rock (7-2) are looking to qualify for the postseason for the fourth time in the last five years.
IUP is listed at the top of the regional rankings, after clinching the PSAC-West title last weekend.
Slippery Rock University defensive end Marcus Martin was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Defensive Player of the Week after his performance in The Rock’s win over Clarion Saturday.
Martin, a senior from West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, broke the NCAA all-division sack record after recording SRU single-game records of 4.5 sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss. The 4.5 sacks brought his career total to 54.5, topping the former NCAA all-division record of 53.5 that was held by Mike Czerwien from Waynesburg (Division III) since 2007.
