Thomas Edward Shields, age 83, of Butler, passed way on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at his residence due to natural causes.
Born July 7, 1937 in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late William H. and Catherine M. Kirker Shields.
He began his career as a union laborer for Schank Construction, then worked for Harrington Roofing, and was proud to say he was on the construction crew of the Butler High School. He was an independent owner and operator truck driver for 15 years, also working for Mertz-Barkley Trucking. He then worked maintenance, in the boiler room, for 23 years in the Butler High School where he retired in 1999. During retirement, he enjoyed working at Hunters Truck Sales.
He was a long time faithful member of the Mt. Chestnut Presbyterian Church.
Tom belonged to the NRA, and enjoyed his grandkids, Steelers, Pirates, hunting, and following NASCAR.
He is survived by his children: Wanda Hopper, Vicki (Howard) Gaurrich, and Thomas W. “Tucker” (Jacquelyn) Shields all of Butler; 4 grandchildren: Senya, Gary, Rachael Gaurrich, and Uriah Shields; 10 great grandchildren: Acelynn, Ryan, Mia, Ramon, Morgan, Kaleb, Jacob, Elexis, Anakan, and Ember; siblings Albert Shields and Linda Daye, both of Maryland.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Wanda “Jeanne” Shields, whom he married October 17, 1956 and who passed away March 2, 2006.
A memorial service to celebrate Tom’s life will be Friday, May 14, 2021, 5PM, at the Mt Chestnut Presbyterian Church, with his Pastor, Rev. Ron Schermerhorn, officiating.
Inurnment, with his wife, will be private at the Mt. Chestnut Cemetery.
Memorial contribution may be given to the Mt. Chestnut Presbyterian Church, 727 W Old Route 422, Butler, PA 16001.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Raisley Funeral Home and Cremation Services, PC, 387 Main Street, Prospect.
