Police are providing more information on Tuesday’s accident at a busy Route 8 intersection.
The single vehicle crash happened just before 8 a.m. on the south end of the Picklegate Crossing in Butler Township. Police say 48-year-old Robert Murtha of Butler failed to a turn at the intersection and went onto the cement traffic island.
His car then hit a utility pole on the island, causing his vehicle to rollover. It then barreled through both the north and southbound lanes of Route 8 and hit the hillside.
Murtha suffered serious injuries and was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital.
The accident also caused a traffic light outage at the intersection, which led to traffic delays. The light is still out as of this morning, so drivers are urged to use caution and expect delays in the area.
