A truck driver shortage in Pennsylvania and across the country has trucking companies looking for help in hauling goods.
Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association President and CEO Kevin Stewart says fewer brick and mortar stores, an aging population of truck drivers, and fewer young people going into the trucking industry and among the reasons for the shortage.
As a result, Stewart says some trucking companies are focusing on recruiting minorities and women.
“Right now, women only represent 6 percent of the workforce in the trucking industry, so there is certainly an opportunity with more female drivers,” Stewart says.
Stewart says a prohibition which prevents drivers from being involved in interstate commerce until they’re at least 21 has hurt the trucking industry, with recent high school graduates being lost to other trades.
Locally, Hunter Truck is hiring diesel technicians. The company will hold open interviews at the end of the month.
