The Pittsburgh Pirates announced a contract extension Monday for manager Don Kelly, who will return for the 2026 season. Kelly took over the club after Derek Shelton was fired on May 8th. The team was 12-26 at that time. Kelly completed the season with the Bucs going 59-65 under his direction, including a 32-33 mark after the All-Star break.
General manager Ben Cherington and team president Travis Williams will both return for the 2026 season. The duo were brought in as part of an organizational overhaul in 2019. The Pirates have yet to reach a winning season under their direction. The Pirates won five less games this year than in 2024, despite having Paul Skenes completing his sophomore season with a 1.97 ERA, the first sub-2.00 ERA since a 20-year old Dwight Gooden had a 1.53 ERA for the 1985 season. Centerfielder Oneil Cruz tied New York’s Juan Soto for the N.L. lead in stolen bases with 38.
The Texas Rangers and manager Bruce Bochy have agreed to part ways a day after the team completed an 81-81 season and missed the playoffs. Bochy is the winningest active manager, and led the Rangers to a World Series title in 2023.
The San Francisco Giants fired manager Bob Melvin after an 81-81 season as well.
The Minnesota Twins fired manager Rocco Baldelli after seven years. The Twins went 70-92 this season.
