The United States women’s soccer team had a disappointing 0-0 tie with Portugal at the World Cup early this morning in New Zealand. Despite the tie, the U.S. women have survived to reach the Round-of-16 in Melbourne, Australia. The tie dropped the defending World Cup champion U.S. team behind the Netherlands for Group E qualifying. This means they will meet undefeated Group G winner Sweden in their next match.
Slippery Rock University alumna and former women’s soccer standout Sofia Harrison played all 90 minutes of an historic upset at the FIFA Women’s World Cup last week, helping the Philippines to a 1-0 shutout win over co-host New Zealand in front of 33,000 fans at Wellington Regional Stadium. It was the first-ever World Cup victory for the Philippines, but they were eliminated in a loss to Norway Sunday. Harrison was the only non-Division 1 player out of 137 former or current NCAA players on World Cup rosters.
