Biking around the neighborhood has always been a popular summertime tradition for kids, and a new initiative will bring more bikes to county children.
As part of the ongoing United Way of Southwestern PA’s “Welcome Back!” initiative, volunteers will be building bicycles over the next three days to distribute to kids in Armstrong and Butler Counties.
150 volunteers are participating in the program this week; and 50 people will be at Cranberry Township Park for the “Build-a-Bike” event. Groups will then be responsible for assembling bicycles, that will then be inspected and distributed to children. In addition to the bikes, kids will receive a helmet, lock, and bike maps from BikePGH.
United Way leaders say that the bikes will be given to children who don’t own a bicycle, or in some cases have never ridden one.
The United Way is tagging this as the “Summer of Play” and is aiming to help kids maintain a healthy lifestyle along with providing active summer activities.
