The federal government has agreed to a fine with Norfolk Southern that will see millions reinvested into the victims.
In conjunction with the U.S. Department of Justice the U.S. Environmental protection Agency has announced a $15 million fine along with $300 million to support victims of the train derailment.
Norfolk Southern estimates that they will spend more than $1 billion in total due to the recovery efforts and improving rail safety.
The settlement comes from a compliant filed by the United States against Norfolk Southern for unlawful discharges of pollutants and hazardous substances.
A federal judge still has to approve the final agreement before it becomes official.
