A local organization is alerting the public about West Nile virus detected in some Butler County mosquitoes.
The Mercer County Conservation District which provides vector control for Butler County stated that a sample recently collected from Zelienople Borough tested positive for the virus.
At this time, no human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Butler County but most people will not develop symptoms. People over 60 years old or with certain medical conditions are at greater risk of serious illness which could include a fever, nausea, aches, and vomiting.
Additional monitoring will be done in this area and appropriate control work will be done. Those spending time near West Beaver and Market streets are advised to take extra precautions such as applying insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants mornings and evenings, and eliminating standing water where mosquitoes will lay eggs.
