Whole milk could soon be returning to schools.
A new bill was advanced by the state House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee.
Whole milk was removed from schools in 2010 in favor of 2% or skim milk in order to battle childhood obesity. But, State Representative John Lawrence believes that many students don’t drink or finish their milk.
“Many dairy farmers across the Commonwealth believe we are losing a whole generation of milk drinkers, since kids are forced, frankly, into drinking lousy tasting skim milk at schools,” Lawrence said. “Most of these skim milk cartons end up in the trash.”
Lawrence says that parents should have an option as well in what their students drink at school.
