The First Round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs began last night. In the Eastern Conference – Tampa Bay defeated Columbus 3-2 in FIVE overtimes. The two teams combined for 151 shots in the game – the most since the NHL began to track the statistic in the mid 1950’s. Blue Jackets goaltender Joonas Korpisalo stopped 85 shots in the game, and still lost.
As a result of the length of that game – the Boston Bruins and Carolina Hurricanes opener was postponed until 11am today.
In the Western Conference – Top seed Vegas defeated Chicago 4-1. Calgary defeated Dallas 3-2.
In addition to the Boston-Carolina game this morning – there are four other games scheduled.
Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford addressed the Penguins qualifying series ouster by Montreal – and promised changes in staff and player personnel. It appears coach Mike Sullivan’s job is safe.
