Winifred E. Kennedy, 97, of Butler, Pennsylvania, passed away on August 23, 2017.
Winifred was born in Butler on July 27, 1920. She was the daughter of the late Frank Leroy and Alice Johanna Steinheiser Beatty.
She attended elementary school at Jefferson Street Elementary in Butler. In 1928, she moved to Grove City where her parents owned a bakery. After the depression, her family moved to Prospect where she attended high school . She earned a scholarship to attend Butler High School where she graduated in 1938. After high school, she worked as a clerk for Standard Motor Company. Later she worked as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone Company. She also kept books for her father’s car repair garage, Frank’s Place in Butler. Other employment included Magnetics and JC Penney. More recently, she and her daughter operated Kennedy Spices, a popular booth at Penn’s Colony festival for several years.
She was married in Butler on August 20, 1946 to Anthony William Kennedy. Anthony died on December 19, 1993. She was a member of the USO when she met Anthony. After a honeymoon and short stay in California, they moved back to East Butler in 1947. She resided there until her move to Newhaven Court in 2017.
Winifred was a member of the East Butler Presbyterian Church. She is also a member of the General Richard Butler Daughters of the American Revolution. She is also a descendant of the Mayflower passenger Edward Fuller.
She was very devoted to her family and enjoyed traveling, baking, crafts, and gardening. She was an excellent homemaker and very loving grandmother, mother and wife.
Winifred is survived by four children: Dale W. Kennedy and his companion Rebecca Renfrew of Butler, David L. Kennedy and wife Anna of Melbourne, FL, LuAnn Cherry and husband Ken of Butler, and Douglas L. Kennedy of East Butler, and five grandchildren: Steven M. Kennedy, Amanda M. Kennedy, Jason A. Cherry, Justin N. Cherry, Karissa M. Kennedy and four great grandchildren, Kiara Kennedy, Margaret “Penny” Cherry, Charlotte Cherry, and Alexandra Cherry. She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Meier and an infant brother, John “Jackie” Beatty.
Friends will be received Saturday, August 26, 2017, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Thompson – Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street Butler, PA.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2017, at 4:00 p.m. at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home Inc., 124 East North St. Butler, PA, with Rev. Mary Kitchen, officiating.
Burial will take place in the Greenlawn Burial Estates.
