Significant financial gifts are not unusual for colleges and universities, but a recent donation to Grove City College is one of the first-ever in the area using cryptocurrency.
The college announced a Bitcoin donation of $4 million from 1965 graduate Howard Winklevoss, a native of Mercer County who would go on to a successful career in business.
“Grove City College played a pivotal role in shaping my career and success and has always been a champion of free enterprise and independence,” Winklevoss said. “This gift is a way to give back to an institution that has given me so much. I hope it will inspire future generations of students to pursue excellence and make a positive impact in the world.”
Grove City’s School of Business will be renamed to honor Winklevoss during a ceremony later this year.
