Three years ago, Summit Elementary School was shut down because of elevated levels of lead in the water.
Now, Governor Tom Wolf is proposing a new plan to help avoid issues like that in the future.
“I am seeking one billion dollars in funding to eliminate lead and asbestos all across our Commonwealth,” Wolf said.
Wolf said one of the objectives in his Lead-Free PA initiative, is a grant program for schools that provide funds for voluntary lead testing.
“Teachers and parents have done what they can to make the school their children are attending safe,” Wolf said. “But local level funding is limited. They have been pleading to the state for help. I’ve heard them.”
Those grants are expected to be awarded soon.
