Pennsylvania is receiving its first round of funding from the federal broadband internet bill.
Governor Tom Wolf says $6.6 million is coming to the state via the “Internet For All” initiative that aims to bring high speed internet to underserved areas in the country.
“The funding coming our way will give Pennsylvania the opportunity to take the next step in expanding broadband access in a way that will create a generational change for everyone across the Commonwealth,” Wolf said.
The initiative will bring at least $100 million to the state over time. Wolf estimates that around 800,000 state residents lack access to high speed internet.
State officials say the initial round of funding will help with plan, deploy infrastructure, and adoption programs. There will also be a portion of the funding used to make sure communities know how to take advantage of having faster internet connections whenever the broadband is installed.
