Hundreds of volunteers are expected to gather at North Main Cemetery Saturday morning to honor veterans in a yearly tradition.
This is now the fourth year that Wreaths Across America has held the event in Butler. Volunteers will gather for a ceremony at noon, and then take time to lay over 1,000 wreaths on the graves of veterans.
Organizer Charles Veazey says the response has been overwhelming.
“It’s cool when you see the cars coming in, and then they keep coming in. It’s just something that we love doing, and we love the support we’re getting from the community,” Veazey said.
He estimates that around 300 volunteers helped last year. It is open to the public, who can then help with the wreaths after the ceremony.
“We encourage families to come and bring their kids. Our motto is remember, honor, and teach,” Veazey said. “We remember the fallen; we honor those who are serving; and we teach the young about the sacrifices that were made for their freedom.”
Veazey says to be at the North Main Cemetery by 11:30 a.m. You can enter through Route 8 and there will be volunteers to help direct you where to park.
