The Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the New York Yankees 6-4 to complete their season. The Yankees scored twice in the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie. The Bucs complete their season 76-86 overall. They were 17 games behind the National League Central Division winning Milwaukee Brewers and 13 games out of a Wild Card playoff spot.
The Pirates had won the first two games of the three-game series. The Pirates won 4-2 Friday night, then picked up a 9-4 victory Saturday afternoon. Jared Jones allowed two earned runs on seven hits, but was pulled from the game two outs away from being eligible for a victory. Paul Skenes pitched two perfect innings in the Saturday game, striking out three. Skenes finished his season with a 1.96 ERA. Mike Burrows made his major league debut after Skenes started the game. He allowed one earned run over 3-1/3rd innings to pick up his first big league victory. The Pirates hit five home runs in that game.
There is an extra day of the Major League Baseball today with the Atlanta Braves hosting the New York Mets for a doubleheader. The Mets reach the post-season with either a sweep or split. If either team sweeps the doubleheader, the Arizona Diamondbacks will claim one of two National League Wild Cards. If the twin bill is split, the Mets and Braves are in.
