Mars Borough is asking residents to complete a water service line survey to learn what material the service line is made up of.
The Department of Environmental Protection has asked all municipalities with water systems to audit and put together an inventory of all service lines.
To check your line, use a key or coin to gently scratch the pipe close to where it comes in through the wall and observe what color it is. If it is orange or pale orange, it is copper. If it is some shade of gray, hard to scratch, and/or a magnet sticks to it, it is likely galvanized steel. If it is some shade of gray, soft, and/or a magnet does not stick to it, you may have lead pipes.
