A group of young people are giving back to their community through a project at a local school.
Members of Girl Scout Troop 28842, out of Mars, recently made improvements to the playground at Mars Area Centennial School.
Sixth-graders Lauren Chadwick, Arden Flynn, Madeline James, Caroline Martin, Addison Pangonis, Anya Peck, Rachel Snyder, Makenna Steiner, Kiara Van Wyk and Grace Wilson worked over two weekends to paint two four square courts as well as basketball backboards and lines on the basketball court. Troop members also built two octagonal “ga-ga” ball courts and installed bases for kickball.
The troop members, all sixth-graders at Mars Area Centennial School, wanted to spruce up the playground, to give their fellow students more opportunities to have fun during recess in the upcoming school year. In June, Troop 28842 hosted a camp for younger Girl Scouts, the proceeds from which were used to fund the playground project.
Last summer, the Girl Scouts built a butterfly garden in Adams Township Community Park, the troop’s first community service project. Troop members continue to maintain the garden.
Mars students don’t return to school until Monday, Sept. 9.
