The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Ottawa Senators 5-2 last night but lost their top scorer to a season-ending injury. Jake Guentzel, who was named his first NHL All-Star Game earlier in the day, was injured after slamming into the boards at PPG Paints Arena after scoring in the third period. Guentzel underwent successful shoulder surgery this morning and will miss four to six months.
Guentzel leads the Penguins with 20 goals and 43 points.
Evgeni Malkin scored twice in the victory, which was the Penguins third in a row. The Pens moved back into second place in the Metropolitan Division. They are one point in front of the Islanders and seven behind the first-place Washington Capitals. The Pens have the fourth-most points in the NHL. They host San Jose Thursday.
