Slippery Rock University has decided to cancel their annual celebration of the Chinese New Year.
This event had been scheduled to take place Saturday, February 15th at the Slippery Rock Township Municipal Building.
The decision was made to cancel the event out of respect for the 425 Chinese victims so far of the coronavirus. An additional 20,000 people have been infected with the virus around the globe.
Chinese New Year is a 4,000-year-old tradition that observes the start of the new lunar year. This year that was on January 25th. The yearly “Spring Festival” continues through February 8th as the year of the Rat.
This event was organized by the Chinese Culture Association and the Chinese Club at SRU as well as sponsored by SRU’s College of Health, Engineering and Science and the Asian Studies program.
