The two Butler City Police Department K-9 units have been outfitted with new bullet proof vests thanks to a generous donation.
A total of two vests were purchased for canine officers Chooch and Rico for a cost of nearly $2,000. The city welcomed the new K-9s onto the force in January.
This expense was covered by donation several months ago from Corina Diehl of Diehl Automotive Group but it took some time to allow for the vests to be fitted to the dogs who will be wearing them.
“I made the donation because they’re such an active part of the police force. They’re usually the first responder, essentially.”
According to Butler City Police Chief Bob O’Neill, maintaining the dogs and the vehicles they use can be expensive with more donations needed.
“We’re solely funded by the public or by any grants we can get and we definitely have taken in less this year than in previous years.”
Diehl also donated additional money last year to purchase protective vests for all human members of the Butler City Police Department.
