The Butler Area School District has given permission for law enforcement to conduct an active shooter drill at the Butler Middle School this weekend.
Monday night, the school board approved a request from the Butler County ESU Team 400 to use the facility for training purposes on Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. and continuing until at least 1 p.m.
In addition to practicing skills like clearing a room, this exercise will allow for law enforcement to become more familiar with the school on the chance that there could be an active shooter event there in the future.
In addition to school police officers, other officers participating come from departments such as Butler City Police, Butler, Adams, Jackson, and Penn Township Police, and Saxonburg Police. Residents should expect to see many vehicles parked near the building on Saturday but no blank rounds or flash bangs are expected to be used.
