Governor Tom Wolf is weighing in on the latest election reform bill proposed by Pennsylvania Republicans.
It’s a long list of changes that includes major overhauls to the mail-in ballot process, including giving counties the right to pre-canvass ballots earlier.
Wolf says he’ll oppose the bill if it restricts voting rights.
“I’m open anything that increases access to voting,” Wolf said. “If it’s a voter suppression bill, I’ll veto it.”
Other highlights of the reform bill include requiring voter ID, the creation of early voting in a couple of years, and moving the voter registration date to 30 days.
The bill would also:
- Move the deadline to requesting a mail-in ballot to 15 days instead of seven days.
- Allow voters to fix a ballot that is missing a signature.
- Establish an bureau to audit elections under the attorney general office.
- Allow counties to open satellite election offices.
- Increase poll worker compensation.
- Require signature verification for mail-in ballots.
- Require counties to purchase electronic poll books.
