The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the defending Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning 6-2 in their season-opener last night. The Pens scored three empty-net goals late in the game after building a 3-1 lead. Tristan Jarry stopped 26 of 28 shots in net.
Several newcomers to the team scored goals last night, including Danton Heinen and Brian Boyle. The Penguins signed the veteran Boyle to a one-year deal prior to the game, after he made the team on a tryout during preseason. He did not play in the NHL last season.
The Pens visit the Florida Panthers tomorrow night, before returning to Pittsburgh for their home-opener Saturday against Chicago. That will be the first of eight straight games at PPG Paints Arena.
