A total of 200 disciplinary actions were filed across the state in December for unsafe digging practices- including one in Butler County.
The local violation occurred in June of 2020 when a property owner was excavating on Garing Road in Chicora Borough.
An underground West Penn Power line was struck and damaged by the property owner who allegedly failed to request the location of the line through the One Call System in advance of the excavation. The property owner has been fined $1,000 for a first offense violation.
The PA One Call Damage Prevention Committee is tasked with reducing the number of hits on underground utilities. This committee is part of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission’s independent Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement.
State law requires contractors and residents to contact PA One Call by dialing 8-1-1 at least three business days before an excavation so utilities can mark where lines are located.
