High School Sports:
WPIAL Girls Basketball Playoffs:
–Top-seeded North Catholic defeated Laurel in the Class 3A Quarterfinals 61-33. Alayna Rocco and Dacia Lewandowski combined for 44 points to lead the Lady Trojans into the semifinals. North Catholic will meet Waynesburg Saturday.
–Seneca Valley fell to North Allegheny 65-48. Olivia West scored 29 points to lead the Raiders topping the 1,000-point mark for her career. The two-time defending champion Tigers move into the semifinals and will face Upper St. Clair Saturday.
Boys Basketball:
–Lincoln Park upset North Catholic 77-67 in the Class 4A Quarterfinals. Ben Tomer led the Trojans with 21 points.
–Belle Vernon eliminated Freeport 66-34, also in the 4A Quarterfinals.
Tonight:
–The Mars boys will host Gateway at 7pm in the Class 5A Quarterfinals.
District 9 Playoffs:
–The Karns City boys defeated Coudersport 56-17 in the 2A Quarterfinals. The Gremlins built a 34-7 lead by halftime and forced a second half Mercy Rule. Karns City will meet Ridgway next Tuesday in the semifinals.
Six Butler Boys Bowlers have qualified for the Pennsylvania State Western Regional Singles tournament in March after competing at the WPIBL Singles Championships Wednesday in Pittsburgh. Rocco Rice finished fourth overall, averaging 235 over three games of qualifying. Rocco won his quarterfinal match before falling in the semifinal round. Brock Hepler finished eighth overall. Marty Imhof finished 12th. Eric Devore, Alex Ekas and Luke Keene also qualified for the Regional event.
Four Butler girls will be competing in the WPIBL Singles Championships in Belle Vernon Thursday.
