With the pandemic subsiding, PennDOT officials are reminding state residents that the REAL ID requirement for domestic flights is around the corner.
Kurt Meyers of PennDOT says the deadline is still about a year away, but around 1.5 million residents have opted for a REAL ID.
“That means about 20 percent of the individuals at this point in time have opted in for a REAL ID, the remainder opted in for a standard issue. We still have a little over 2 million customers that haven’t made a choice one way or the other at this point in time,” Meyers said.
The law was originally supposed to go into effect in 2020, but COVID delayed that process.
“It’s my expectation at this point in time that the federal government won’t move the new deadline, but I certainly can’t guarantee that,” Meyers said.
You can learn more about REAL IDs on PennDOT’s website or at the local DMV.
