Pennsylvania is a step closer to naming a chocolate treat as the official candy of the Commonwealth.
The State Senate Government Committee approved a bill that would make the Hershey Kiss the state candy.
Supporters of the bill say that Hershey is one of the candy capitals of the world and it makes sense to honor it with an official candy.
However this is Harrisburg—so naturally there was opposition. Dan McLaughlin is a state senator from Erie.
“I have three chocolateers in my district, and part of the legislative process is the back and forth discussing the merits of the bill. For those reasons, I’m going to be a respectful no vote on this bill, and I urge the rest of the committee to put this on pause as to what should be our state candy,” McLaughlin said.
McLaughlin was not alone, as other lawmakers that have candy manufacturers in their district voted against the bill.
