The Butler Area School District is considering a policy change that would make the overdose reversal drug Naloxone available in school facilities.
At their meeting Monday night, the Butler School Board approved the first reading of the policy by a vote of 6 to 2.
According to Superintendent Dr. Brian White, this policy is borrowed from one used by several other districts in the state and directs school nurses and school police to undergo a 15 minute training in administering Naloxone during an in-service day.
While school board member Bill Halle expressed concern that having Naloxone available would result in more overdoses on school property, the policy states that the district has no duty to administer the substance to any person. Most first-responders carry Naloxone.
This policy will be on the board’s agenda for a second reading next month, at which time if passed it would go into effect.
