The Pirates bullpen and fielding issues allowed the Los Angeles Dodgers to escape with an 8-7 victory last night at PNC Park. The loss snapped a Pirates seven-game winning streak. Colin Holderman allowed a three-run home run in the eighth inning. The Dodgers had taken a 2-1 lead after the first inning, but the Pirates would eventually build a 7-2 lead. Andrew McCutchen hit his fifth home run of the season, a three-run shot in the fourth inning. The Bucs also had three errors in the game.
The Pirates did have 12 hits in the game, led by Ke’Bryan Hayes, Carlos Santana, Jack Suwinski and Jae-Hwin Bae who had two hits each. Bae also had two stolen bases and scored twice. Starting pitcher Johan Oviedo allowed four earned runs in 5-1/3rd innings. He allowed six hits, walked two and struck out four.
The Pirates and Dodgers play again tonight at 6:35pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 6:10pm. Roansy Contreras starts for the Pirates tonight. Tony Gonsolin makes his debut this season for the Dodgers tonight.
The Bucs remain one game in front of Milwaukee in the National League Central Division. The Brewers lost again to Detroit, falling 4-3 last night.
