There was a slight decrease in the number of traffic deaths last year according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
The latest data shows that 1,179 people died in traffic accidents last year—which is down from 1,230 in 2021. Reportable crashes also decreased to the second lowest number since 1951.
Although fatalities in crashes involving speeding decreased last year, fatalities due to distracted driving increased. Also increasing in 2022 were fatalities involving head-on collisions, crashes at signalized intersections, and fatalities in crashes involving 65 to 74 year old drivers.
PennDOT continues to invest in education and enforcement through nearly $24 million in federal grant funding annually that supports behavioral safety programs.
