A waterway familiar to many local residents has been named Pennsylvania’s River of the Year.
The Allegheny River achieved recognition for the award through an online public vote which is organized by the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers.
The Allegheny was nominated by Three Rivers Waterkeeper who will be able to use a $10,000 Leadership Grant to fund a year full of activities. The rivers in competition with the Allegheny this year were the Youghiogheny and the Lackawaxen.
The Allegheny River begins as a stream in Potter County and continues about 325 miles past areas such as Oil City, Franklin, Kittanning, Ford City, and Freeport before joining with the Monongahela River at the Point in Pittsburgh to form the Ohio River.
