Some local champions were crowned this weekend – including an historic win for a local basketball team. The North Catholic girls won their third WPIAL championship in a row following a 40-37 victory in overtime over Blackhawk Saturday afternoon. It was also the 23rd league title in school history. The victory was North Catholic coach Molly Rottmann’s 12th WPIAL championship and moved her past late North Catholic coach Don Barth, who won 11 titles as the head coach of the program.
Butler high school wrestler Santino Sloboda won the 114 pound title in the WPIAL Class 3A Southwest Region Tournament Saturday. He is now 36-0 this season. Ana Malovich of Butler also won the girls 118-pound title.
