The Pittsburgh Pirates completed a season-opening four-game sweep of the Miami Marlins following a 9-7 victory in 10-innings Sunday. The Bucs had 11 hits in the game and overcame a blown save by David Bednar and starting pitcher Bailey Falter allowing five runs in the first inning. Falter allowed a grand slam in that opening frame. It was the first time the Pirates have opened their season with a four-game sweep of a team since 1903.
Rowdy Tellez hit his first home run as Pirate, a three-run shot in the seventh inning. Hunter Stratton earned his first major league save by closing out the 10th inning.
The Bucs won 9-3 Saturday and 7-2 Friday after opening with a 6-5 victory in 12-innings last Thursday. Saturday’s game saw the debut of rookie pitcher Jared Jones who pitched into the sixth inning of his first major league victory and struck 10.
The Pirates are in Washington to open a three-game series today. First pitch is 4:05pm.
