James H. “Sarge” Shearer, 75, of Butler, passed away, Wednesday morning, July 3, 2024, in the comfort of his home.
He was born September 4, 1948 in Kittanning, PA, a son of Olive Shearer and the late Herbert M. Shearer.
Sarge graduated from Butler High School, class of 1966. He retired as Sergeant of the Butler Township Police Department in August of 2014, following 42 years of service beginning in 1972. Following his retirement he worked part-time for Cochran Subaru. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Vietnam War, with 24 years of total service time. He was a member of the N.R.A, the Police Marksmens Association, the F.O.P Lodge #107 in Butler and the American Legion Post #778 in Lyndora. Sarge was a P.I.A.A. Official, also belonging to the Butler County Sports Officials and the Baseball Umpires Association. He enjoyed golfing and was an avid history reader.
Surviving is his wife, Rebecca Jo “Becky” (Steighner) Shearer, whom he married April 24, 1971.
His 3 sons: James K. Shearer, Christopher J. (Melissa) Shearer and Donald L. Shearer.
Grandsons: Kyle Shearer, Cole Shearer and Chase Shearer.
His mother, Olive “Judy” Shearer.
3 sisters: Bonnie Jean Vensel, Sue Ellen (Robert) Pelles and Lori Ann Schaffner.
Cousins, Dick Shearer and Tom Shearer, also many other cousins, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
4 sisters-in-law and spouses and 3 brothers-in-law and spouse.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mackenzie Renee Shearer.
Friends will be received at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 East Cunningham Street, Butler, from 2:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Thursday. A celebration of life will be held on Friday from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm at the American Legion Post #778 in Lyndora. Sarge will be laid to rest in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
