A disagreement with organizers could result in the end of a downtown Butler event.
At their meeting Thursday night, Butler City Council heard from Mayor Bob Dandoy about recent discussions he had with organizers for the Italian Festival scheduled for August 23rd, 24th, and 25th.
“In the beginning, it was indicated that they would have access to Main Street at 2 p.m. on Friday. Over the years, they have started showing up on Thursday,” Dandoy said.
The problem with that is that it removes parking and negatively impacts businesses on Main Street. When reminded about the language of the agreement, festival organizers allegedly told the mayor that adhering to those times would be impossible and they would have to be changed to closure at 5 p.m. Thursday in order for the festival to continue.
Mayor Dandoy reflected on his experience last year.
“Last year, it was horrible. I had people screaming at each other. I was in my office taking screen shots of the agreement, sending it to the Chief and organizers saying ‘No it says this and you’re not supposed to be doing that right now,'” Dandoy said. “It was a nightmare.”
A majority of council expressed agreement for enforcing the original Friday time for the closure of Main Street and Mayor Dandoy said he would convey that message to festival organizers.
